Rep. Doyle Helps Fund
McKeesport Little Theater Renovations
Friday, March 22, 2002 - McKeesport, Pennsylvania - U.S. Representative
Mike Doyle (PA-18) presented the McKeesport Little Theater with a check in
the amount of $20,000 in federal funds to be used for the theater's renovations.
Rep. Doyle secured this funding as part of the Fiscal Year 2002 U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) budget.
"The
McKeesport Little Theater is an icon in the arts community of Western
Pennsylvania," stated Doyle. "I am pleased to be able to provide these
funds which will help with the necessary renovations to keep the theater
a viable and thriving program."
The McKeesport Little Theater is in its' 41st season. It was first established
by Phyllis Braverman as the Mon-Yough Players/Mon Valley Masquers and performed
at the local YWCA. In 1963 it changed its name to the McKeesport Little Theater
and performed at its first home at Penney and Jenny Lind Streets in an old church
the thespians secured for a dollar.
The McKeesport Little Theater moved into is current home, a former synagogue
at the corner of Coursin Street and Bailie Avenue, almost 30 years ago. Since
then, the theater has focused on renovating their facility and increasing their
visibility in the community while providing high-quality theater to the Mon Valley.
"The goal of the McKeesport Little Theater is to bring affordable theater
to the residents of the Mon Valley," stated Florence Herrup, President of the
McKeesport Little Theater Board of Directors. "Ticket prices generally do not
cover the cost of our general operating expenses; therefore, these funds will
go a long way in helping us make many of the much needed renovations. We are
very grateful for Congressman Doyle's efforts in obtaining for these funds and
appreciate his support of our mission."
According to Ms. Herrup, it is anticipated that a portion of these federal
funds secured by Rep. Doyle will be used to replace and strengthen the cement
walkway in front of the theater, which has recently begun to sink and become
a safety hazard. Other renovation projects include renovating the kitchen
and establishing a full-service website.
The McKeesport Little Theater has a history of a variety of performances
including the operatic "Amahl and The Night Visitors" to the original "The
'I Hope We Get a Good' Revue," from performances by the Theater Juniors to
the experienced thespians in "The Shadow Box," "Wait Until Dark" and "The
Odd Couple."
