Congresswoman Johnson began her career as a nurse in the Veteran's
Administration Hospital. She has been a leader in Congress on issues
dealing with veterans. Congresswoman Johnson believes that the utmost attention
should be given to issues affecting veterans and their standard of living after
service. She believes that America has a duty to safeguard the rights of
those who have provided the ultimate service to the country.
In the 106th Congress, Congresswoman Johnson is a
co-sponsor of H.R. 3573, the Keep Our Promise to America's Military Retirees
Act. The bill provides for health care coverage for
veterans. Congress has found that many of the nation's older veterans were
not provided access to adequate health care, and that space
available military medical facilities are limited.
Congresswoman Johnson also supports
efforts to ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs has the ability to
recoup the costs caused by veterans who smoked. She also supports raising
the cost of living allowance for disabled veterans. She is also
committed to ensuring that veteran entrepreneurs have access to government
contracts.
