U.S. HOUSE TO DEBATE PRESIDENT’S STRATEGY IN IRAQ

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives this week will debate President George W. Bush’s decision to add more than 20,000 U.S. troops to the field in Iraq to combat insurgent forces there. See below for the full text of the proposal.

  THIS WEEK IN THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2007

On Monday, the House will meet at 12:30 p.m. for morning hour and 2 p.m. for legislative business. Votes will be postponed until 6:30 p.m.

  1. H.Res. 134 - Recognizing and honoring the employees of the Department of Homeland Security for their efforts and contributions to protect and secure the nation
  2. H.R. 437 - To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 500 West Eisenhower Street in Rio Grande City, Texas, as the "Lino Perez, Jr. Post Office"
  3. H.R. 414 - To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 60 Calle McKinley, West in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, as the "Miguel Angel Garcia Mendez Post Office Building"
  4. H.R. 34 - To establish a pilot program in certain United States district courts to encourage enhancement of expertise in patent cases among district judges: Establishes a pilot program in certain U.S. district courts under which: (1) those district judges who request to hear cases involving patent or plant variety protection issues are designated by the chief judge to hear them; (2) such cases are randomly assigned to the district court judges, regardless of whether they are designated; (3) a judge not designated to whom such a case is assigned may decline to accept the case; and (4) a case so declined is randomly reassigned to one of those judges so designated. 
  5. H.Con.Res. 44 - Honoring and praising the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on the occasion of its 98th anniversary
  6. H.Res. 122 - Recognizing the significance of the 65th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and supporting the goals of the Japanese American, German American, and Italian American communities in recognizing a National Day of Remembrance to increase public awareness of the events surrounding the restriction, exclusion, and internment of individuals and families during World War II
  7. H.Res. 109 - Recognizing the historical significance of the Pinedale Assembly Center, the reporting site for 4,823 Japanese Americans who were unjustly interned during World War II
  8. H.R. 342 - To designate the United States courthouse located at 555 Independence Street, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, as the "Rush Hudson Limbaugh, Sr., United States Courthouse"
  9. H.R. 798 - To direct the Administrator of General Services to install a photovoltaic system for the headquarters building of the Department of Energy

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2007 AND THE BALANCE OF THE WEEK

On Tuesday, the House will meet at 9 a.m. for morning hour and at 10 a.m. for legislative business. On Wednesday and Thursday, the House will meet at 10 a.m. for legislative business. On Friday, the House will meet at 9 a.m. for legislative business.

 

H.R. 976 - Small Business Tax Relief: Provides extended higher limits for expensing for small businesses through 2010 (rather than 2009). Extends the Work Opportunities Tax Credit for one year through the end of 2008. Extends the Restaurant Tip Tax Credit to cover the proposed increase in the minimum wage. Provides more equitable treatment regarding self-employment taxes for married couples who are the only active participants in a small business. Closes a loophole related to lower tax rates on dividends and capital gains.

 

H. Res. XXX - Iraq War Resolution: The following is the complete text of the non-binding resolution: “The text resolves: “Congress and the American people will continue to support and protect the members of the United States Armed Forces who are serving or who have served bravely and honorably in Iraq; and Congress disapproves of the decision of President George W. Bush announced on January 10, 2007, to deploy more than 20,000 additional United States combat troops to Iraq.”
