DEFENSE SECRETARY GATES FIRES ARMY SECRETARY, HEAD OF WALTER REED ARMY MEDICAL CENTER

Responding to disturbing reports about conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and the treatment of some patients there, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has fired Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey and the hospital’s commander, Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman. Gates and member of Congress have pledged further investigation and action regarding the complaints about Walter Reed and other military hospitals.

  1. H.R. 122 - To amend the Reclamation Wastewater and Groundwater Study and Facilities Act to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to participate in the Inland Empire regional recycling project and in the Cucamonga Valley Water District recycling project
  2. H.R. 467 - Southern Idaho Bureau of Reclamation Repayment Act of 2007: Authorizes any owner of land within the A&B Irrigation District in Idaho to repay at any time the construction costs of District project facilities that are allocated to such land. Provides that, upon full payment of such costs, the parcels shall not be subject to specified ownership and full-cost pricing limitations under federal reclamation law, for which the Secretary shall, upon request, provide the landowner a certificate.
  3. H.R. 276 - Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station Outstanding Natural Area Act of 2007: Establishes the Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station Outstanding Natural Area (Outstanding Natural Area) in San Luis Obispo County, California. Directs the Secretary of the Interior to manage the Outstanding Natural Area as part of the National Landscape Conservation System and to complete a comprehensive management plan to provide long-term management guidance for the public lands within the Outstanding Natural Area. 
  4. H.R. 903 - Colorado Northern Front Range Mountain Backdrop Protection Study Act: To provide for a study of options for protecting the open space characteristics of certain lands in and adjacent to the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests in Colorado.
  5. H.R. 995 - To amend Public Law 106-348 to extend the authorization for establishing a memorial in the District of Columbia or its environs to honor veterans who became disabled while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States
  6. H.R. 299 - Lowell National Historical Park Boundary Adjustment Act: Modifies the boundary of the Lowell National Historical Park to include certain properties in the City of Lowell, Massachusetts. 
  7. H.R. 1047 - To authorize the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a study to determine the suitability and feasibility of designating the Soldiers’ Memorial Military Museum located in St. Louis, Missouri, as a unit of the National Park System
  8. H.R. 376 - To authorize the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special resource study to determine the suitability and feasibility of including the battlefields and related sites of the First and Second Battles of Newtonia, Missouri, during the Civil War as part of Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield or designating the battlefields and related sites as a separate unit of the National Park System, and for other purposes
  9. H.R. 807 - Columbia Space Shuttle Memorial Study Act: To direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special resource study to determine the feasibility and suitability of establishing a memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia in the State of Texas and for its inclusion as a unit of the National Park System. 
  10. H.R. 497 - Brigadier General Francis Marion Memorial Act of 2007: Authorizes the Marion Park Project and Committee of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation to establish a commemorative work on federal land in the District of Columbia and its environs to honor Brigadier General Francis Marion.
  11. H.R. 247 - To designate a Forest Service trail at Waldo Lake in the Willamette National Forest in the State of Oregon as a national recreation trail in honor of Jim Weaver, a former Member of the House of Representatives

  1. H.Res. 98 - Honoring the life and achievements of the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior and reaffirming the continued commitment of the House of Representatives to a just and lasting peace in the Republic of the Sudan
  2. H.R. 987 - To endorse further enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and to facilitate the timely admission of new members to NATO, and for other purposes: Endorses the further enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and urges our allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to work with the United States to realize a role for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in promoting global security, including continued support for enlargement to include qualified candidate states, specifically by entering into a Membership Action Plan with Georgia and recognizing the progress toward meeting the responsibilities and obligations of NATO membership by Albania, Croatia, Georgia, Macedonia, and Ukraine.
  3. H.Res. 149 - Supporting the goals of International Women’s Day (March 8)
  4. H.Res. 180 - Honoring the life and achievements of Leo T. McCarthy and expressing profound sorrow on his death
  5. H.Res. 162 - Recognizing the contributions of the Negro baseball Leagues and their players for their achievements, dedication and sacrifices to baseball and the Nation
  6. H.Con.Res. 62 - Supporting the goals and ideals of a National Children and Families Day, in order to encourage adults in the United States to support and listen to children and to help children throughout the Nation achieve their hopes and dreams, and for other purposes
  7. H.R. 710 - Living Kidney Organ Donation Act: Provides that for purposes of provisions of the National Organ Transplant Act that prohibit the transfer of any human organ for use in human transplantation for valuable consideration, kidney paired donation does not involve such a transfer. (Delayed from last week.)
  8. H.R. 584 - To designate the headquarters building of the Department of Education in Washington, DC, as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Federal Building
  9. H.R. 544 - To designate the United States courthouse at South Federal Place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the "Santiago E. Campos United States Courthouse"
  10. H.R. 399 - To designate the United States Courthouse to be constructed in Jackson, Mississippi, as the "R. Jess Brown United States Courthouse"
  11. H.Res. 182 - Commending and congratulating Virginia State University on the occasion of its 125th anniversary

On Wednesday, the House will convene at 10 a.m. and recess immediately. The House will then reconvene at approximately 10:45 a.m. in a Joint Meeting with the Senate to receive His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. On Thursday, the House will meet at 10 a.m. for legislative business. On Friday, the House will meet at 9 a.m. for legislative business.

 

H.R. 569 - Water Quality Investment Act of 2007: Amends the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to require projects receiving sewer overflow control grant assistance to be carried out subject to the requirements applicable to projects receiving assistance from state water pollution control revolving funds, except to the extent that the governor of the state in which the project is located determines that a revolving fund requirement is inconsistent with the purposes of the sewer overflow control grant program. 

 

H.R. 700 - Healthy Communities Water Supply Act of 2007: Amends the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to increase the amount of authorized appropriations for the pilot program for alternative water source projects.

 

H.Res. 202 - Committee Funding Resolution for the 110th Congress: A summary of this bill was not available at time of publication.

 

H.R. 720 - Water Quality Financing Act of 2007: To amend the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to authorize appropriations for state water pollution control revolving funds.
