June 20, 2003: Reps. Emanuel (at podium), Gutknecht, Emerson, and DeLauro join bipartisan group of Representatives to introduce H.R. 2427, the Pharmaceutical Market Access Act of 2003, a bill that would allow Americans to buy prescription drugs at the same prices as in Canada or Europe.

Kachatorian was granted citizenship with Congressman Emanuel help on an expedited basis. The Iranian-born Army Reservist was eager to be sworn in so he could ship out with the 416th unit to the Persian Gulf. He was sworn in on January 16, 2003, and was deployed four days later.

photo, Thursday, May 29, 2003: Thanks to a joint effort between Congressman Rahm Emanuel and The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by America’s leading distillers and dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, students got a life-saving lesson about the dangers of underage drinking and driving during a presentation at Lakeview High School. In the midst of Prom and Graduation Season, Congressman Emanuel appeared with Brandon Silveria, a young man who was involved in an alcohol-related crash at age 17 just before his high school prom, and Tony Silveria, Brandon’s father. In Illinois, 104 young people under the age of 21 died in alcohol-related traffic crashes in 2001, an increase of 2% since 2000. Twenty-three died during the months of April, May and June -- prom and graduation season. (According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration)
photo, Memorial Day, May 26: Congressman Emanuel observes Memorial Day at Franklin Park ceremony, presents medals to World War II veteran Peter Ignatowski Background on Private First Class, Battery C, 33rd Field Artillery Battalion Peter Ignatowski: : After being drafted into the Army in February 1946, Mr. Ignatowski performed basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and then went to Camp Kilmer, New York. He was dispatched to Europe as a member of the Army Constabulary, and landed in Le Havre, France in June 1946. While in Germany he was stationed near Nuremberg and guarded the Palace of Justice during the tribunals. He also participated in the effort to settle displaced persons from Poland and elsewhere during the rebuilding of Europe in the postwar period. Mr. Ignatowski received the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal & Germany Clasp, the honorable service Lapel Button WWII, and the Sharpshooter Badge & Carbine Bar for his service in the U.S. Army in Germany following the end of World War II. This Memorial Day, Mr. Ignatowski will finally receive his medals.
