| Congressman Faleomavaega is pleased to announce that
as of today the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Evergreen International
Airlines reached an agreement for the delivery of mail to American Samoa.
According to the USPS, Evergreen Airlines will be making weekly deliveries
to American Samoa. The first delivery will occur on June 29, 2000.
Also, the USPS made special arrangements with Hawaiian Air to carry approximately
9,000 pounds of mail on last night’s flight. Hawaiian Air also agreed
to take one load of mail on tonight’s flight and another on Monday, June
26.
Faleomavaega said, “This is the best news of the day for the businesses
and people of American Samoa. It appears that we will finally get
this messy situation resolved.”
In trying to solve the mail delivery problem for American Samoa,
Congressman Faleomavaega sent a very strong letter to Postmaster General
William J. Henderson calling for a quick solution. In addition, he
sent letters and placed calls to a number of other offices including the
House Appropriations Subcommittee on Treasury, Postal Service and General
Government seeking their assistance. Faleomavaega also contacted
the Department of Defense (DOD).
“I want to acknowledge and thank Chairman Jim Kolbe of the House
Appropriations Subcommittee on Treasury, Postal Service and General Government
for his prompt response to my request for assistance. I am sure that
Chairman Kolbe’s strong letter to the Postmaster General made a lot of
difference,” Faleomavaega said. “I thank the Postmaster General for
his assistance and I also thank the Department of Defense for its understanding
of the situation. If it becomes necessary, the DOD is willing to
assist and is standing ready to carry some of the mail during its regular
flights to American Samoa.” |
