The Office of Representative Tom Feeney is currently accepting applications for its internship programs. Internships offer students and recent college graduates a unique opportunity to learn about the inner workings of Congress and a chance to explore careers in public service. To be considered, students must submit an application, resume, and writing sample. Internships normally last 3 – 6 months, however special arrangements can be made (on a case by case basis) for longer or shorter appointments.
Although internships are unpaid positions, interns are treated as full participants in Representative Feeney's office. As such, it is important for them to be professional, organized and motivated. While reviewing applications, the office is most responsive to students who possess the following skills:
Professional phone and office manner
Word processing and basic computer knowledge
Punctuality
Ability to follow instructions
Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
Ability to take initiative
Ability to work under pressure
Relates to others well
Detail oriented
Interns play an integral part in the busy atmosphere of a Congressional office. They will be given a variety of tasks and opportunities, including, but not limited to:
Responding to constituent requests
Researching and following legislation
Assisting with special projects
Assisting with constituent casework
Answering telephones
Guiding tours
Contacting various government agencies
Correspondence
General office work
Data entry
Delivering or receiving information to and from other Congressional offices
During their time in Representative Feeney's Office, interns may have added experiences of attending meetings on behalf of staffers or the Representative, attending Congressional receptions, visiting the House Floor, and working in close conjunction with a professional office staff in various areas of policy, including Health Care, Trade, Tax, Veterans, and Environmental issues.
