M&S Caucus: Accomplishments of 2006

The Modeling and Simulation Caucus championed its second year of existence in its efforts to create national awareness for this rapidly-growing industry. Since the caucus kickoff in February of 2005, the membership of lawmakers participating in the Caucus has grown to over twenty members from across the nation. These members and their work provide a strong basis resulting in a national dialog about this exciting high-tech industry.

From a conversation with the highest-ranking government official in this country to simulating machine guns in the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill, successful events and progress have taken shape over the course of 2006:

  • Modeling and Simulation Leadership Summit – Caucus Members gathered at the M&S Leadership Summit which brought together over 350 delegates of industry and government to Suffolk, Virginia, in February. In discussions at the summit, delegates designated goals for the promotion of the M&S industry which included action by the Caucus to encourage the Administration to publicly acknowledge the importance of M&S and to declare M&S a "National Critical Technology."
  • Creating Dialogue with President Bush – Along with other Members of the House and Senate, Congressman Forbes met with the President in March to discuss the important role that M&S can play in addressing national challenges such as military preparedness and operations, homeland security, disaster preparedness and relief, energy management and education. Also emphasized in the meeting was the leadership that M&S creates for the United States in global economic forums relating to science and technology. Following the meeting, Congressman Forbes sent a letter to President Bush, underscoring the importance of his declaration of Modeling and Simulation as a “National Critical Technology,” and its importance to U.S. world economic leadership.
  • 2006 M&S Exhibition on Capitol Hill – The Caucus hosted the first annual M&S Exhibition on Capitol Hill. The exhibition brought in over 30 companies from a number of fields to demonstrate the growth and development of the M&S industry. A tremendous turnout of lawmakers, national media and congressional staff attended the event.
  • 2nd Annual Panel Discussion at I/ITSEC – Caucus Members will participate in the second annual panel discussion at the 2006 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) on December 4, 2006. During this widely-attended event, the Caucus will update I/ITSEC attendees on developments in the second year of the Caucus and to forecast plans for the future. The Caucus will also review developments in public policy over the past year and the growth of the modeling and simulation industry across the nation.

The Caucus welcomes your ideas or thoughts for the following year. To contact the Caucus, please send a letter by mail or fax to:

MS&T Collaborating on a National Level

By Congressman Tom Feeney

Business development in Modeling, Simulation and Training (MS&T) isn’t a zero-sum game where success in one geographic area comes at the expense of another. MS&T holds so much promise that everyone benefits if there is local and national collaboration.
