Caucus Members Participate at I/ITSEC

Members of the Congressional Modeling and Simulation Caucus attended the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference on December 4, 2006. Chairman Randy Forbes, and Caucus Members Bobby Scott (VA-03), Tom Feeney (FL-24) and Ric Keller (Fl-08) all took part in the second-annual panel presentation. The Members each gave an opening statement and took questions from the audience of over 400 individuals in the industry, military and from academia.

Discussion among the the panel included a wide range of topics, including how the United States can utilize M&S technology in different ways, such as national issues like immigration. Participants also discussed the "human-element" technology development, the advancement of M&S as a career path, and the need to attract math and science students to the field.

MARINE CORPS SYSTEMS COMMAND, QUANTICO, Va. (Dec. 12, 2006) -- During the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), in Orlando Dec. 4-7, Florida’s Governor Jeb Bush presented the Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) with the Governor's Award for Significant Achievement in Modeling and Simulation. This award recognizes MCSC’s development and fielding efforts of the Marine Corps’ Combined Arms Command and Control Trainer Upgrade System (CACCTUS) program.

New medical simulation center adds reality to training

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (Army News Service, Dec. 4, 2006) - It's almost too realistic: the darkness, smoke, flashing lights, yelling, bodies strewn across the ground, blood - all used in a new Fort Drum facility designed to ready military medical professionals for combat emergencies.

Before stepping into the cockpit of a commercial jetliner for the first time, pilots have racked up hundreds of hours in the air, usually at the controls of small planes. In coming years, they may get most of their flight experience without ever leaving the ground. The international organization that sets the world's aviation regulations has adopted a new standard that could alter the nature of pilot training.

Iraq war veterans relate experiences to simulation pros

Army Capt. Chris Byrne was shaken violently by the blast, which engulfed a large truck in his convoy on the road to Tikrit. Like others in his unit, Byrne figured his vehicle was next. But once the initial shock passed, Byrne found himself barking orders, securing the scene's perimeter and rushing to help rescue two crew members who were horribly burned.
Byrne is sharing his story this week at the U.S. military's top high-tech training industry show, the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation & Education Conference. He is among a group of Iraq war veterans in Orlando to talk about the value of war-game training -- what works and what doesn't work -- in preparing them for combat.
