Forbes Reacts to New Bush Strategy on Iraq |
WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04)
issued the following statement in reaction to the speech by
President Bush regarding his new Iraq strategy:
“There is no question that we need a new approach to our strategy in
Iraq. Whether the President’s proposal is the appropriate course of
action will remain to be seen as the details of the plan are
examined by the American people, the Congress and our military
commanders on the ground in Iraq.
“Critical to the success of this new approach will be the extent to
which the plan includes: 1) increased deployment of Iraqi forces in
Baghdad; 2) heightened accountability for American resources; and,
3) direct confrontation of the fundamental conditions driving the
cycle of violence in Iraq. These conditions, which include rampant
unemployment, government corruption and the fair distribution of oil
revenue for all Iraqis, will guarantee continued violence unless
they are addressed squarely with a combined military, economic and
political strategy driven primarily by the Iraqi people.”
