Video Log: Gallegly awards medals to youth, Vietnam veteran• “US Rep Elton Gallegly presents Bronze Star to Vietnam Vet Norman Campbell” – KadyTV—On Aug. 11, 2011, I awarded the Bronze Star to Vietnam War veteran Norman M. Campbell Jr. of Newbury Park. Campbell was serving as a Radio Telephone Operator with the 501st Infantry Regiment when, on May 6, 1968, his unit came under enemy fire when entering a village on patrol. Spec. 4 Campbell aided a wounded squad leader by coordinating the MEDEVAC of the squad leader, continuously exposing himself to intense enemy fire, then continued to provide suppressive fire for his unit while a successful counterattack was executed. For those actions, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device. (The “V” stands for Valor.) • “US Rep Elton Gallegly presents Congressional Silver Award to Jason Flahie” – KadyTV—On Aug. 11, 2011, I awarded the Congressional Award Silver Medal to Jason Flahie of Westlake Village. The Congressional Award is the U.S. Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14- to 23-year-olds. Participants earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. In earning his Congressional Award Silver Medal, Flahie volunteered more than 280 hours at MANNA, the Conejo Valley Food Bank; improved his vocal range for personal development; earned a black belt in Tang Soo Do; and hiked to the rim to the floor of the Grand Canyon to explore its natural beauty.
