Appropriation Project Requests 2010 (continued)

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department—California Multi-jurisdictional Methamphetamine (CAL MMET) Investigators—$350,000 Department of Justice, COPS Methamphetamine

The entity to receive funding for this project is the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, located at 800 S. Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009.

Support is requested for two Cal MMET investigators. The Ventura County Combined Agency Task Force (VCAT) is a collaborative effort with city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies working toward the disruption, dismantlement, apprehension, and arrest of narcotic offenders and drug trafficking organizations. The funding would be used for two Senior Deputy investigators who will be utilized to specifically target mid to large-scale methamphetamine dealers and manufacturers. The federal support will also be used for vehicle costs and miscellaneous safety equipment for these two positions. These investigators will be assigned to the Special Services Division, Special Investigations Unit.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Regional Gang Unit Forensic Scientists—$318,000 Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Byrne Discretionary

The entity to receive funding for this project is the Ventura County District Sheriff’s Department, located at 800 S. Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009.

Support is requested for two forensic scientists as well as the associated training costs and essential equipment. The Sheriff’s Gang Unit is responsible for the apprehension of gang members, the disruption and dismantlement of gangs, and the investigation and prevention of gang-related crimes. This addition to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Gang Unit will enhance the regional aspect of the Gang Unit by adding much-needed forensic scientists dedicated to analyzing evidence from gang-related crimes throughout the county of Ventura. The geographic area of Ventura County encompasses several local law enforcement jurisdictions.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department—DNA Services—$200,000 Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Byrne Discretionary

The entity to receive funding for this project is the Ventura County District Sheriff’s Office, located at 800 S. Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009.

Support is requested for funding to assist the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department in providing timely DNA services. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Forensic Sciences Laboratory had a 200 percent increase in the amount of DNA requests this past year. National trends mirror increasing local demand for DNA services. The Forensic Sciences Laboratory is the only laboratory in Ventura County conducting DNA profiling and analysis. Continued federal funding is necessary to maintain this service at an acceptable level and assist in the identification of partnerships on a regional and national basis.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department—Computer Aided Dispatch Upgrade—$105,073 Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Byrne Discretionary

The entity to receive funding for this project is the Ventura County District Sheriff’s Office, located at 800 S. Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009.

Support is requested for funding to replace and maintain three CAD servers that are no longer entirely supported by the vendor and are nearing the end of their product life expectancy. This will permit the 9-1-1 call-takers and dispatchers to provide the services expected by the people of Ventura County without interruption or delay.
