Question: How do I find information on the availability of federal educational financial assistance programs? Answer: High school counselors and most colleges and career schools have free, up-to-date information on financial aid for higher education. The U.S. Department of Education also maintains comprehensive information on federal grant and loan programs. For information, please visit its Money for College page. The state of California also offers free, up-to-date information on financial aid. For information, please see California’s Financial Aid page. Also please check the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Education, Scholarships, & Job Placement website to find information on how to avoid scholarship and student loan scams. Question: How can I find information on repayment plans for federal student loans? Answer: For information on repaying student loans, including how to calculate interest, how to arrange an electronic payment, and what to do if you are having difficulty making your payments, please see the U.S. Department of Education’s Repayment Information page. Question: Where can I get information on federal student loan forgiveness programs for teachers? Answer: There are several student loan discharge, forgiveness and deferral programs for teachers who serve in low-income areas and teachers who serve in a subject-matter shortage area. Question: Where can I get information on federal student loan forgiveness programs for public service workers? Answer: There are student loan forgiveness programs for many public workers, members of the military, employees of federal, state, local, or Tribal government and AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers.
