Question of the Week: Budget Resolution
These questions are culled from phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails sent to my Thousand Oaks, Solvang, and Washington offices. Each week I will add another question and answer. Week of April 3, 2009 • Question: How did you vote on the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Resolution? → Answer: On Thursday April 2, 2009, the House of Representatives passed the $3.55 trillion budget proposed by President Obama for FY 2010, despite my opposition. This budget spends too much, taxes too much, and borrows too much. It creates a $1.2 trillion deficit in 2010 and a $3.95 trillion deficit over five years. In addition, it includes the largest tax increase in U.S. history, and leads to the highest level of borrowing ever. For these reasons I supported the budget alternative offered by Rep. Paul Ryan. The Ryan budget alternative would have spent $270 billion less than the Obama budget in 2010, and $1.5 trillion less over five years. It would have extended the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts set to expire in 2010, and provided a long-term patch for the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). In addition this alternative would have cut the nation’s deficit in half by 2014. The Ryan alternative budget would have curbed spending, created jobs, lowered taxes, and controlled the national debt. With families and small businesses hurting, and too many American losing their jobs, we cannot repair our economy by more spending, new taxes, and more borrowing. Please be assured that I will continue to fight for legislation that will help this country return to economic prosperity.
