Question of the Week: Public Health Care Plans
These questions are culled from phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails sent to my Thousand Oaks, Solvang, and Washington offices. Each week I will add another question and answer. Week of May 15, 2009 • Question: What is a “public health insurance plan?” → Answer: A public health insurance plan is a government-run program in which the government determines: • Benefits or services offered, including which tests and treatment options (surgeries, therapies, and prescription drugs) are covered. The government would also decide whether the plan would limit choices of doctors or hospitals. • The amount each American would pay for coverage. • The amount each American would pay out-of-pocket for copays for doctor visits, prescription drugs, tests, and hospitalizations • Eligibility, including whether illegal immigrants or temporary guest workers would be covered. • Reimbursements for health care providers, such as hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, and home health care workers. • How much and what method of taxation the American public would pay (over and above the coverage and copay costs) to underwrite the public health care plan.
