Question of the Week: AgJobs Act
These questions are culled from phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails sent to my Thousand Oaks, Solvang, and Washington offices. Each week I will add another question and answer. Week of June 12, 2009 • Question: What is your position on H.R.2414, the AgJobs Act? → Answer: H.R.2414, which was introduced by Representative Howard Berman, would grant amnesty to many illegal immigrants and their families who have been working in agriculture within the last two years. The immigrant would eventually be eligible for permanent residency in the United States. The bill would also grant amnesty from prosecution for Social Security-related identity or payment false statements committed by the immigrant. I am opposed to this bill, although I recognize that some industries, agriculture in particular, have a need for foreign workers. In the past, I have supported guest worker programs that are limited in scope and ensure that the costs of importing workers are not borne by the taxpayer. However, I will not support amnesty because it rewards those who have broken our laws and will only encourage many millions of others to do so. For more information about my positions on immigration issues, please see my Illegal Immigration page.
