Question of the Week: Spending
These questions are culled from phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails sent to my Thousand Oaks, Solvang, and Washington offices. Each week I will add another question and answer. Week of July 10, 2009 • Question: As a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, why did you vote against the Department of State and foreign operations spending bill? → Answer: The Department of State and foreign operations appropriations act, H.R. 3081, contains a total of $48.8 billion in discretionary spending, an increase of $12.2 billion or 33 percent above the discretionary spending level for FY 2009. H.R. 3081 receives the highest increase in funding by percentage of any appropriations bill. The spending increases in H.R. 3081 would contribute to an overall total discretionary spending level of $1.09 trillion over FY 2009. With the United States in a recession, unemployment at record levels, and federal spending on a stimulus that does not appear to be working, I could not justify sending 33 percent more U.S. taxpayer dollars overseas.
