Question of the Week: Afghanistan
These questions are culled from phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails sent to my Thousand Oaks, Solvang, and Washington offices. Each week I will add another question and answer. Week ending October 9, 2009 • Question: What should the United States’ policy be in Afghanistan? → Answer: Our mission in Afghanistan is vital to our national security. We cannot forget that Afghanistan is where the 9/11 terrorists were trained and the 9/11 attack was planned and developed. If we fail in Afghanistan and it once again becomes a sanctuary for terrorists groups such as Al Qaeda, we greatly increase the likelihood of another attack on the United States or one of our allies. I agree with President Obama that Afghanistan is war of necessity. To win this war, Gen. Stanley McChrystal is asking for additional troops. President Obama should listen to his hand-picked commander and provide the resources necessary to secure victory. In addition, President Obama needs to persuade the American public that this is a war worth winning. He should explain why sending the troops and resources necessary to secure more regions, building up the Afghan army and police, and working closely with these Afghan forces, is the way to defeat the insurgents. Also, for more information on the terrorism, please see my Terrorism key issue page.
