Question of the Week: Transparency

Jeff Lyon, left, is congratulated by Congressman Gallegly, center, on receiving the Congressional Gold Medal, June 21, 2006.

These questions are culled from phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails sent to my Thousand Oaks, Solvang, and Washington offices. Each week I will add another question and answer.

Week ending October 23, 2009

• Question: Do you believe legislation should be made available to the public before voting on it?

→ Answer: I strongly agree that members of Congress along with the general public should have an opportunity to read legislation before it is voted on in the House of Representatives. As you may know, H.Res.554 would amend the rules of the House of Representatives to require that legislation and conference reports be available on the Internet for 72 hours before consideration by the House. Rep. Brian Baird introduced H.Res.554 on June 17, 2009.

This legislation has been referred to the House Committee on Rules, of which I am not a member. As a cosponsor of this legislation, however, I will continue to do all I can to persuade my colleagues to pass it.
