Rep. Taylor's Letter to the Secretary of Energy regarding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Expansion in the Richton, Mississippi salt domes:  For a downloadable version, CLICK HERE

December 20, 2007

The Honorable Samuel W. Bodman

U.S. Department of Energy
1000 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC 20585

Dear Secretary Bodman;

            I am writing to respectfully request that the Department of Energy hold additional public hearings in Jackson County, Mississippi relating to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve expansion in the Richton, Mississippi salt domes.

            Although the Department of Energy originally held their public hearing on October 18, 2005 at the Marriott in Jackson, Mississippi, the citizens of South Mississippi and state and local officials were largely unaware of these hearings because they were heavily involved with the recovery efforts in the wake Hurricane Katrina, which hit the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005.

            The people of South Mississippi deserve to have their voices heard regarding this expansion.  There are a number of questions that the citizens and public officials would like to have answered.  Like me, they are concerned about the potential impact that this project may have on the Pascagoula River and the Gulf of Mexico.  The ecological health of these bodies of water, are vital to the economy of the region and nation.  This additional public hearing will give the citizens and state and local officials an opportunity to ask questions and hear first-hand the plans for the expansion.

            Again, I strongly urge you to send the appropriate official from your agency to conduct additional public hearings in Jackson County, Mississippi on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve expansion in the Richton, Mississippi salt domes.  Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to your response.

                                                                        Sincerely,                                                                                               GENE TAYLOR                                                                                               Member of Congress

On Wednesday June 6th, 2007, the Armed Services Committee held a full committee hearing about Dateline's recent accusations regarding Pinnacle Dragon Skin body armor.  Currently, soldiers are issued Interceptor Body Armor, which includes Outer Tactical Vests (OTV), a set of Enhanced Small Arms Protective Inserts (ESAPI), Enhanced Side Ballistic Inserts (ESABI), groin, throat, shoulder, and arm protectors, and a combat helmet with pad suspension systems.

I have put together a side by side comparison of both the Interceptor Body Armor and the Pinnacle Dragon Skin Body Armor.  This chart shows that soldiers in combat today, have the best body armor available given the extreme conditions they are in, while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rep. Taylor's Comments on S. 1348 the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007

I am firmly against the provisions in S. 1348 granting amnesty to illegal immigrants and will vote against any amnesty legislation if it is considered by the House of Representatives.  The Senate has started debate on immigration reform and is expected to finish with the bill by June 8th.  President Bush has stated his support for the Senate legislation, since it contains many provisions of his temporary worker program.  I have consistently opposed the President’s plan, as it basically amounts to an amnesty.

The last time our country granted amnesty to illegal immigrants was in 1986 during the Reagan Administration.  Back then, it was claimed amnesty would bring an end to illegal immigration.  With the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the nation today, the 1986 amnesty was clearly a failure.  It would be foolish and irresponsible for Congress and our President to repeat this mistake and grant yet another amnesty.  To read more CLICK HERE.
