HARMAN DECRIES RENEWED DEFICIT SPENDING

- Fights for a New Budget that Funds the War on Terrorism and Protects Social Security -

WASHINGTON D.C. - Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Redondo Beach), spoke on the House floor yesterday in strong support of a fiscally responsible budget plan that would have balanced the budget while meeting spending priorities.

Harman, who has voted for balanced budgets throughout her tenure in Congress, opposed the House Leadership's decision to preclude debate on an alternative balanced budget. "I take a back seat to no one in support of a strong defense budget and increased intelligence spending," she stated. "However, these goals need to be met within the framework of a balanced and responsible budget with balanced priorities."

The balanced budget blueprint alternative was drafted by the Blue Dog Coalition - a group of 33 moderate-to-conservative Democrats focused on fiscal responsibility - of which Rep. Harman is a member. The House Leadership blocked debate and a vote on the Blue Dog plan.

"I strongly oppose the notion that Democrats are not in favor of balanced budgets," said Harman. "We are a nation at war, and Homeland Security is our nation's number one priority, but we can only achieve true homeland security in conjunction with economic security.

Passing fiscally responsible and balanced budgets is absolutely necessary to achieve economic security. At a time when our economy is still fragile, it is more important than ever that we not return to the multi-billion dollar annual deficits of the early 1990's and keep our promise to the American people to protect the Social Security and Medicare trust funds."
