April 15, 2002 HARMAN PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL RALLY

WASHINGTON D.C. - Standing on the West Portico of the United States Capitol with a bipartisan group of members of Congress, Congresswoman Harman today participated in the National Rally in Solidarity with Israel. Afterwards, Harman issued the following statement: Standing with Elie Wiesel and Natan Sharansky, both survivors of the worst forms of terror in the last century, is an honor. And it is an honor to stand with many colleagues in Congress and leaders in the American Jewish community to condemn wanton acts of terror intended to inflict maximum physical harm on innocent civilians in Israel. |

The violence must stop. Suicide bombers are murderers and their actions are inconsistent with mainstream religious tenets in the Muslim faith.
I deplore the reported recent statement of Mrs. Arafat condoning suicide bombing, and call on her husband and his organization to repudiate her statement in Arabic in the Arab press.
I also call on President Mubarak, whose government receives $2 billion in foreign aid annually from the United States, to condemn recent reported statements by two major Egyptian clerics condoning suicide bombing. Egypt, our ally and one of the few Arab states to sign a peace treaty with Israel, must do more to stop its Street from encouraging terrorist actions by Palestinians which threaten innocent lives.
Finally, I am appalled at the huge increase in overt acts of anti-Semitism in Europe, particularly France. Our allies, our partners in NATO, must bring the perpetrators of violence against numerous synagogues and, recently, Jewish youngsters on a French soccer field, to justice. Not since the 1930s has Europe seen such vicious activities directed toward people of the Jewish faith. These acts must be quickly and effectively punished."
