HARMAN DELIVERS KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT COMMISSIONING CEREMONY
OF THE U.S. COAST GUARD CUTTER HALIBUT
--The Coast Guard's Newest Patrol Boat Bolsters Homeland
Defense Capabilities --

LOS ANGELES - The Coast Guard's newest patrol boat, the 87-foot
Cutter Halibut (WPB 87340), was commissioned today in a ceremony at Marina
del Rey. Rep. Harman sponsored the cutter and delivered the
keynote address.

|
In her address, Harman said: "Today's threats to our homeland
are unprecedented. But maintaining homeland security is nothing
new to the Coast Guard.
I know firsthand from my recent
visits to the Port of Los Angeles the critically important role
the Coast Guard has
performed in coordinating port security and in protecting vessels
and cargo, as well as passengers, from the terrorist threat."
The 87-foot patrol boat replaces the former Cutter Point Bridge,
which was decommissioned September 28th. The newly designed coastal
patrol boat has several enhancements over the Vietnam era 82-foot
boats they replaced.
|
The new class of boats employs an innovative stern launch and recovery
system using an aluminum hulled jet-drive small boat.
|
The larger pilothouse is equipped with an integrated electronic
chart display system, which interfaces with the Coast Guard's new
surface search radar.
The Marine Protector Class of cutters is named for mammals, fish
and birds living on or near the seas.
