HARMAN ANNOUNCES FEDERAL GRANT TO PROMOTE
REGIONAL AVIATION PLAN
WASHINGTON - Efforts to limit growth at Los Angeles International
Airport by promoting a regional aviation plan received a major boost yesterday
as a result of a $1.5 million grant from the federal government, Rep.
Harman announced.
The US Department of Transportation told Harman it has awarded the grant
to the Southern California Association of Government (SCAG) to update
the region's aviation transportation plan, analyze the area's airspace
and include regional airport system scenarios based of future air passenger,
air cargo and general aviation growth forecasts.
"I have long worked to cap growth at
LAX at 78 million annual passengers," said Harman, who has led
a congressional effort to fund regional airport planning. "But limiting
growth at LAX can only be achieved by sharing the benefits and burdens
of aviation growth with other airports across the region. This grant will
allow SCAG to study appropriate regional authorities' best options for
implementing a regional strategy,
including those by SCAG and the Southern California Regional Airport Authority
(SCRAA)."
