LOS ANGELES - Rep. Harman was briefed today by U.S. Coast Guard Captain John Holmes, Commander of the Port of Los Angeles, on the latest steps being taken to enhance security in order to protect against terrorism. Following the private meeting, Harman was given a tour of the Port in the Coast Guards latest security tool, a new vessel, specifically designed to conduct homeland security operations in and around the Port. Following the briefing and tour, Congresswoman Harman said: The Port of Los Angeles is ahead of the curve when it comes to protecting vessels, cargo and passengers from the threats posed by terrorism." |

"This new vessel is just one example of the many steps being taken under the leadership of Captain Holmes to strengthen security in the South Bays waterways.
Known as the MSST, the ship is only the third of its kind to be commissioned in the U.S. Permanently stationed in San Pedro, the ship is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a crew with expertise in reacting to hostile chemical, biological or radiological attacks.
While the Port of Los Angeles is making great strides to enhance security, far more work remains. I will continue my work in Congress to ensure that those responsible for protecting our community from terrorism - both here at the Port of Los Angeles and throughout the South Bay - have the resources, technology, and support they need to get the job done.
We must also work to ensure that steps to enhance security not only protect the Ports neighbors, but its workers and the free flow of commerce, concluded Harman.
As Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security, Congresswoman Harman has been a leader in the effort to improve security. In addition, Harman successfully fought for passage of a Homeland Security Department Bill in the House and continues to push for its passage in the Senate. Harman is a strong supporter of the Port Security bill currently working its way through Congress and continues her work to secure additional funds for port security enhancements.
