Harman Renews Call On Corps To Consider
Environmental Impact Statement For China Shipping
-- Supports Berth 100, But Environmental Issues Must
Be Addressed --
WASHINGTON D.C. - In light of recent decisions of the U.S. District
Court and the California Court of Appeals regarding the Port of the Los
Angeles Berth 100 and China Shipping project, Representative Harman renewed
her call on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials to consider conducting
an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Harman
first called for an EIS last January.
The letter, addressed
to District Engineer Colonel Richard G. Thompson, voiced strong support
for continued growth at the Port, including the Berth 100 and China Shipping
project, but also firmly stated Harman's intention to protect local residents
from potential environmental harms.
Harman wrote: The Port is an important economic engine for our
region, but its many operations disproportionately affect its immediate
neighbors in San Pedro and Wilmington. Mitigating these effects must be
an important focus of the governments review and, as such, I remain
committed to working with you, the Corps, the Port and the community to
ensure that Berth 100 and the China Shipping project moves forward promptly
and in an environmentally-responsible manner.
In the letter, Harman specifically asked Army officials to take advantage
of the courts recent decision, stating: "In my view, the Appeals
Court stay of the project affords the Corps an opportunity to thoroughly
reconsider its position and undertake an EIS of the project to correct
deficiencies pointed out in the District Courts opinion concerning
the cumulative impacts of Berth 100 and the construction and operation
of the balance of the China Shipping project.
