Statement on Californias Medicaid Waiver Submission
and Its Impact on
Los Angeles Countys Health Care Crisis
Los Angeles - With our county health care system on life
support, the states submittal of a constructive proposal to Director
Scully is welcome news. It is the product of thoughtful negotiations among
county, state and federal officials and could prove to be the foundation
for the long-term solutions we need.
When CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) Director Tom
Scully came to LA on November 6th
at my request and met with County Supervisors and Secretary Grantland
Johnson, he gave us a clear sense of what he was looking for. These discussions,
along with the passage of Measure B, helped break a log jam in the complicated
and politicized negotiations that had preceded.
I look forward to continuing to encourage a bipartisan effort to maintain
quality, affordable trauma services and health care in LA County. Tom
Scully personally committed to me that he would respond to the state's
proposal very promptly and I am confident that he will.
