VENICE BEACH, CA - Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice) held a midday rally to voice her opposition to the Bush Administration's anti-environmental policies, including its plans for drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and off the California Coast. Rally participants included the Sierra Club, National Resources Defense Council, California League of Conservation Voters, and Environment California. The rally marked the beginning of a two month long education campaign designed to develop grassroots opposition to drilling in ANWR and other environmental rollbacks. The education campaign will culminate in a strong show of support on Earth Day, April 22. |

"Our environment is one of our nation's most valuable resources," said Harman. "The Bush Administration does not get this message. They continue to roll back vital environmental safeguards designed to protect our land, water and air. Just last week, Republicans added anti-environmental riders to a major spending bill. Today, we are sending a strong signal to the Administration that Californians cannot and will not stand for these anti-environmental policies."
Greg Wheatstone, Director of Programs for the National Resources Defense Council added: "While it is critical that members of Congress stand up to the Bush Administration's assault on landmark environmental protections, it is equally important that citizens voice their opposition as well. This public education campaign opposing drilling in ANWR, drilling off the California Coast and the Administration's other rollbacks is an excellent opportunity for everyone to be heard."
People from throughout Los Angeles participated in the rally held on Venice Beach at the LA County Lifeguard Headquarters overlooking the beach.
"Every person at today's rally can make a difference. Our voices can join millions of Americans who oppose drilling in ANWR. Together, we can force Washington to listen," said Harman. "The solution is not drilling, it is clean energy and conservation."
