HARMAN ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $600,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR SOUTH BAY FAMILY HEALTHCARE CENTER

- Funding is one step in ongoing effort to bolster non-profit health clinics throughout region-

Washington, DC - U.S. Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice) today announced $600,417 in federal grant funding for the South Bay Family Healthcare Center (SBFHC) to provide healthcare for the uninsured. The funding was awarded after Harman and SBFHC raised concerns about the inadequate access to health care for uninsured individuals and families living in the South Bay.

“South Bay Family Healthcare Center has served as a safety net for more than 30 years by providing access to quality health care for our community’s uninsured,” said Harman. “This new funding will allow SBFHC to help an additional 5,300 patients each year.”

Jann Hamilton Lee, Executive Director of the South Bay Family Healthcare Center, stated: “We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to provide essential health care to many more individuals and families in need, and are grateful for Congresswoman Harman’s support in building the health of our community.”

SBFHC operates clinics in Redondo Beach and Harbor Gateway/Gardena. These clinics provide a variety of services for area adults and children, 93 percent of whom live at or below the poverty level. Services provided include: diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses, detection and monitoring of chronic illnesses, and preventive care.

“The grant awarded to the South Bay Family Healthcare Center is only one small step in a long struggle to provide family clinics throughout LA and the entire region with adequate federal financial support,” Harman stated. “Until we reach the day when health insurance is a reality for every American, it’s reassuring to know the South Bay can turn to non-profit clinics, such as SBFHC.”

The South Bay Family Health Care center was one of 31 facilities nationwide, and one of only five California clinics, selected by the Department of Health and Human Services to receive a Health Care New Access Point Grant.
