Hinchey Announces $105,000 For Bulletproof Vests For Local Police

Ulster County, NY - In an effort to provide law enforcement officials have the equipment they need to safely and effectively fight crime and protect residents, Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today announced that 18 police departments in his congressional district have been awarded a total of $105,206 in federal grants to purchase new bulletproof vests for their officers.

"Securing these federal funds to pay for new bulletproof vests that keep our brave police officers safe is the least we can do for these heroes who risk their lives each day in order to ensure that we are safe and have a good quality of life," Hinchey said. "These bulletproof vests can very well mean the difference between life and death for police officers, which is why I am so delighted that these grants have been awarded.  Our police officers will now be better protected, which means that all of us in these communities will be protected as well."

The grants come from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) program.  The bulletproof vest grants are designed to assist smaller communities; covering up to 50 percent of the total cost of the vests for police departments with jurisdictions of fewer than 100,000 residents.  Since it started in 1999, over 11,500 jurisdictions have participated in the BVP Program, funds committed to support the purchase of an estimated 450,000 vests.

"In addition to paying for these new bulletproof vests that will protect our heroic police officers, these grants also relieve local and state taxpayers from having to pay the full cost of this much-needed equipment," Hinchey said.
