Hinchey, Local Officials Announce Nearly $1 Million
For Village of Saugerties Street Upgrades

Funds Will Help Highlight Village's Historic Features,
Improve Quality of Life & Boost Economic Development

Saugerties, NY - As part of his ongoing effort to improve the quality of life for the Village of Saugerties and help spur local economic development, Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) will today announced nearly $960,000 in new federal funding for street upgrades and renovations.  The funds, which Hinchey recently secured from Congress, will be used for a wide array of improvements, including the installations of pavers in the crosswalks, which will be more durable and more consistent with the village's historic character than the current arrangement.

"With these new federal funds, the Village of Saugerties will receive the money it needs to proceed with a renovation that has long been needed to bring out its true character, improve the quality of life for residents, and to help give a boost to economic development in the area," Hinchey said. "Saugerties has a great history to it, and these improvements will enhance its historic feel.  These significant improvements to Saugerties' streets will be yet another sign of the rebirth of this great village."

Saugerties has a nine-point beautification plan that includes such projects as improving street lighting, Main Street cleanup, parking lot repair, and tree revitalization. Eight blocks of the downtown area have been designated as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The beautification plan seeks to emphasize the area's historic features. Hinchey has previously secured $325,000 to help with the plan.

"In addition to helping beautify the Village of Saugerties, boost its economic development, and improve the quality of life for residents, this federal allocation will also spare local taxpayers from a significant part of the price tag," Hinchey said. "I will continue to look for ways to bring federal money back to Saugerties to continue our efforts to improve the quality of life and bolster economic development in the area."

Hinchey secured the funds for the Village of Saugerties street upgrades from Congress as part of the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU) measure, which is a major transportation projects bill.  The president signed the measure into law in August.
Joining Hinchey at the press conference were Mayor Bob Yerrick and other Village officials.
