Hinchey Obtains $250,000 In Federal Funds
For Bardavon 1869 Opera House

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today announced that he has secured $250,000 in new federal funds for improvements to the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie.  Hinchey used his seat on the House Appropriations Committee to secure the funds, which are included in the Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, The Judiciary, and District of Columbia Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2006, which passed the House earlier today by a margin of 392-31.

"The Bardavon is a central part of our cultural history here in the Hudson Valley and continues to play an important role in our community today," Hinchey said. "These federal funds will help make much-needed improvements and renovations to the Bardavon so that the theater can be a source of entertainment and enrichment in our area for generations to come."

The funds will be used as part of the ongoing "Campaign for the New Century" -- a $5.2 million fundraising drive for capital projects at the Bardavon.  The $250,000 Hinchey secured will be used towards the improvement of the electrical system in the theater, improvements to the dressing room, enhancements to the lighting on stage and in the gallery, as well as overall restoration of the interior and lobbies, including restoration of the proscenium mural.

The Senate today also passed the Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, The Judiciary, and District of Columbia Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2006 with the funding for the Bardavon.  The measure, which is one of ten spending bill Congress is required to pass annually, now moves to the White House where the president is expected to sign it into law.
