Hinchey Presents Overdue Purple Heart Medal To Local Veteran

Binghamton, NY - Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today presented long overdue war medals, including a Purple Heart, to 81 year-old, World War II veteran Joseph Kvaltine of Binghamton, New York.

"These medals represents the bravery and courage that Joseph Kvaltine demonstrated while serving our country admirably as a member of the U.S. Navy," Hinchey said. "I'm honored to present these medals to Joseph Kvaltine and encourage all other local veterans who have never received the medals they've earned to contact my office so I can help obtain the medals they earned."

While serving as a Navy medic near the Philippines, Kvaltine became violently ill. Because there were no other medical personnel on board his ship, he had to be transferred to a second ship, which was then bombed by Japanese forces. Kvaltine earned his Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the bombing.

In addition to the Purple Heart, Hinchey presented Kvaltine with his Discharge Button, Honorable Service Lapel Pin, U.S. Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.
