Rosendale, NY - Just one month after he hosted a special grants workshop for local nonprofit community arts organizations with the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today announced that two local arts organizations have been awarded a total of $27,500 in NEA grants. Hinchey said that the Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale will receive $20,000 and the Woodstock Film Festival will receive $7,500 from the NEA.
"The arts play a very important role in the Hudson Valley's culture and economy, which is why I am very pleased that two local arts organizations will be receiving federal grants that will help them continue their wonderful contributions to our region," Hinchey said. "Having Chairman Gioia visit the Hudson Valley enabled him to get a firsthand look at the rich artistic heritage of the region, which should hopefully continue to serve us well via more federal grants to local artists and art organizations."
In addition to hosting a grants workshop in October, NEA Chairman Dana Gioia also visited various Hudson Valley arts organizations, including the Women's Studio Workshop, which will use its grant to support residencies for artists and provide them with studio space, technical and production assistance, a materials allowance, and travel costs for an eight-week stay. During his visit to the Hudson Valley, Gioia also met with one of the leaders of the Woodstock Film Festival. That organization will use its NEA grant to support its 2007 festival, which will include screenings, panels, workshops, and concerts.
The NEA is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Endowment is the nation's largest annual funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases.
