Since becoming a member of the Appropriations Committee, I have new oversight responsibilities for the spending of federal dollars, as well as an increased role in the prioritization of federal spending.
My years teaching at Sunnyvale High School were some of the best years of my life. As any parent would agree, there are few things more rewarding in life than helping a child reach his or her potential. Unfortunately, the American educational system requires substantial reform to help ensure that the next generation has the skills they need to compete in an increasingly globalized world.
In the days since the defeat of the Economic Emergency Stabilization Act we have seen severe economic impacts both on Wall Street and on main street.
The consequences of the vote - a historic drop in the stock market and the loss of $1.2 trillion in savings, investments, and retirement funds - had a major impact on American families and small businesses. Leaders from many Silicon Valley companies have contacted me to urge quick congressional action.
As the San Jose Mercury News reported, the state of California faces severe dangerous consequences from the economic instability. In order to pay their obligations, state governments borrow and pay off loans in the financial markets.
Below you will find several resources which provide more extensive background on the crisis facing our nation and the solutions needed to stabilize our fragile economy.
Impact on Main Street
Silicon Valley – Silicon Valley tech companies, business groups push for action
Local Government Concerned - Anxiety spreads among state and local governments as the market meltdown has frozen credit, leaving them unable to sell bonds and borrow money, ruined financial giants and roiled investment values.
Economists – Economists Support Economic Recovery Plan
I recently held my first Telephone Town Hall on our nation's education policies. I focused this inaugural Telephone Town Hall on education because, as a former high school teacher, principal, and school board member, education has always been my top priority.
With the increased global competition facing our nation, education reform is one of the most critical challenges facing our nation.
The Telephone Town Hall allowed me to connect with thousands of constituents and was a great chance to talk about the state of education in California and across our nation.
Throughout America's history, immigrants have built our infrastructure, fueled our economy through entrepreneurship, and made social and cultural contributions that enable us to better understand the rest of the world.
I introduced a bill to honor those contributions, by providing immigrant families access to critical assistance such as English language and civics education. The Strengthening Communities through Education and Integration Act will help immigrant communities become a more integral part of the American fabric and maximize their social and economic contributions.
Ensuring American competitiveness in an increasingly global economy requires significant improvements in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
I sponsored the Enhancing STEM Act to improve STEM education coordination among Federal and state governments. The Enhancing STEM Act provides Federal Agencies and states with the infrastructure required to work collaboratively, establish national STEM education goals, and to coordinate STEM education initiatives.
I developed the bill with my distinguished colleague, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), who introduced a companion bill (S.3047) with Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN).
Congress votes to name San Jose post office after Gordon N. Chan 10/6/2008 This week, the U.S. Congress honored a pioneer in California’s Asian American community, when it named the Lundy Avenue Main Post Office in Santa Clara after Gordon N. Chan, a leader in the area’s agricultural industry and in community service.
