En Espaņol Impuestos justos y equitativos April 16, 2008 Washington, DC – Este 15 de abril, el último día para pagar impuestos, las familias ricas pagaron proporcionalmente menos impuestos que una familia de clase media. Leer más Funding Priorities in our CommunitySince becoming a member of the Appropriations Committee, I have new oversight responsibilities for the spending of federal dollars, as well as an increased role in the prioritization of federal spending. Our Children Deserve a World Class EducationMy years teaching at Sunnyvale High School were some of the best years of my life. As any parent would agree, there are few things more rewarding in life than helping a child reach his or her potential. Unfortunately, the American educational system requires substantial reform to help ensure that the next generation has the skills they need to compete in an increasingly globalized world. A New Direction for AmericaAmericans are calling for a New Direction after years of inaction on the toughest challenges: a costly war without an end; skyrocketing fuel prices without a plan for energy security; a housing crisis which threatens to force more families from their homes. All have pushed us to the brink of recession. The New Direction Congress moved quickly to address the downturn and rebuild our economy. With bipartisan support and unprecedented speed, we enacted an economic stimulus plan that put Recovery Rebates in the hands of 130 million American households and will help create 500,000 jobs. We extended Unemployment Insurance to the growing number of Americans looking for work ... made healthy food affordable to millions of American ... and launched a new GI Bill for a full, four-year education for the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. We are working now to tackle the housing foreclosure crisis ... combat record prices at the pump ... and help restore consumer confidence by protecting our children from toxic toys. Enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (STEM) Act of 2008Ensuring American competitiveness in an increasingly global economy requires significant improvements in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. I sponsored the Enhancing STEM Act to improve STEM education coordination among Federal and state governments. The Enhancing STEM Act provides Federal Agencies and states with the infrastructure required to work collaboratively, establish national STEM education goals, and to coordinate STEM education initiatives. I developed the bill with my distinguished colleague, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), who introduced a companion bill (S.3047) with Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN). A New Direction for AmericaThe American people demanded a New Direction: to make America safer, to help restore the American dream, and to restore accountability and fiscal responsibility to the people's government. The 110th Congress brought new faces, new energy and a steadfast commitment to a New Direction. In January, the first woman Speaker of the House in American history gaveled open the Congress in honor of all of America's children. Passage of the Six for '06 agenda, within the first 100 hours and with broad bipartisan support, signaled change and a new focus on American priorities. Today, under Democratic leadership, the Congress is focused on a New Direction that makes American families and children, and our future generations, our highest priority. With faith in the future, we have begun to build a remarkable record of progress. Recent News Rep. Mike Honda hosts foreclosure prevention workshop
