Led by Captain Wade Rowley, the National Guard is working to seal the primary drug smuggling corridors along the California border.
As seen in the following photos of current efforts in Calexico, the work consists of replacement fencing as well as new construction. In its entirety, the fencing will run 1.9 miles west and 2.1 miles east from the Calexico Port of Entry.
In 1988, Congress passed, and President
Reagan signed into law, Congressman Hunter’s legislation making the Department
of Defense the lead agency in federal drug interdiction efforts.
The border fence has greatly reduced the drive-through of vehicles carrying
drugs across the border from Mexico.
