Lynnwood High Schools Receive $99,868 Education Grant to Research Smaller Learning Communities
8 November 2004
U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced today that two Lynnwood high schools are receiving a joint one-year planning grant of $99,868 to study how smaller learning communities might improve the educational experience of their students. Lynnwood High School and Meadowdale High School, both part of the Edmonds School District in Washington State, will split the grant, which allows large high schools to plan how to make their school environment more personalized through the use of smaller learning communities. Educators believe that more personalized high schools lead to better academic success among students.
"This grant is great news for the students, educators, parents and communities involved with Lynnwood and Meadowdale high schools," said Inslee. "We know that smaller learning environments foster academic success among our local students. By providing Lynnwoods high schools with resources to enhance their learning atmosphere, our students will have the confidence and tools they need to succeed in life after high school. It is wonderful that the federal government recognizes the hard work and ambitious initiatives being conducted by the faculty and students at Lynnwood and Meadowdale high schools."
The purpose of the Department of Education's Smaller Learning Communities Program is to promote academic achievement through the planning, implementation or expansion of small, safe, and successful learning environments in large public high schools. The planning grants help schools create or expand a smaller learning community program to ensure that students graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to make successful transitions to college and careers.
Following the planning grant, the schools can apply for a follow-up implementation grant from the federal government should they decide to carry out their small learning community proposal.
