Inslee lauds bill that would get kids active

28 February 2007

Today, U.S. Reps. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.), Ron Kind (D-Wis.) and Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) introduced legislation that would include guidelines for physical education as part of a landmark federal law aimed at providing quality education to all American youth.

Inslee, a sports enthusiast and member of the House committee with jurisdiction over public health issues, made the following statement on the introduction of the Strengthening Physical Education Act in Congress:

"I got interested in outdoor activities and sports because my parents were hikers and my dad was a high school basketball coach. To this day, I'm an avid outdoorsman and can't pass up a pickup game of basketball or football.

"Not all children have role modeling at home, but this bill can make sure they have it at school. Giving kids the physical and mental benefits of exercise will help them excel in the classroom and throughout life."
