Inslee Announces $6 Million for Shoreline's Aurora Project
6 October 2000
Washington, D.C. U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced that the Transportation Conference Report, which passed in the House, includes $6 million in federal funds for the Aurora Corridor Project in Shoreline. Inslee has been personally involved with this project. He has toured the site with Shoreline local officials. The new funds are a victory because last year the Aurora Project did not receive any federal funds. Furthermore, this year the President did not request funds for this project, and previous versions of the House and Senate Transportation bill did not include any funds for this project.
"Traffic congestion in our area is a problem that I am working hard to address. When I toured the Aurora Corridor Project in August with Shoreline community leaders, I was impressed with the project, and I am pleased that I could help secure funding to continue the work that is underway," said Inslee.
The Aurora Corridor Project is aimed to enhance pedestrian security along Shoreline's "Main Street," improve traffic flow, and reduce congestion. These improvements support local economic development objectives of stimulating investment in underdeveloped property along the Aurora Avenue. Various local, state, and federal grants have funded the project.
The federal Transportation Conference Report that will fund the Aurora Corridor Project also includes a total of $65.5 million in funds for Seattle area transportation projects.
- $50 million allocated for the Link Light Rail construction, this is an increase of $25 million over last year's appropriation;
- $5 million towards the Sounder Transit Trains;
- $2 million for Sound Transit Express Buses, last year's Transportation bill did not include any funding for the Sound Transit buses;
- $2.5 million toward creating an integrated SmartCard system that combines ticketing for seven major area transit providers (Community Transit, Sound Transit, Everett Transit, Kitsap Transit, King County and Pierce Transit, and the Washington State Ferries.)
