WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Joint Economic Committee (JEC) Chairman Jim Saxton (R-N.J.) announced today that Victor I. Sheymov, former KGB Eighth Chief Directorate (Russian equivalent of the NSA), would testify about Russian radio frequency (RF) technology at a hearing, "Terrorism and Intelligence Operations," on May 20, 1998. RF technology, when used by terrorists, can electronically disable equipment that operates with electronic components, including computers, air traffic control centers, aircraft, and other essential parts of critical infrastructure.
Sheymov will provide new information on the Russian RF program, and he will be available for questions by the media after his testimony. The JEC hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, 1998, in Room 106 Dirksen Senate Office Building.
Sheymov defected to the United States for ideological reasons in 1980 and continued to work with the NSA on RF protection systems as a consultant. He currently is president of ComShield Corporation, where he designed a new generation of RF protection systems. He has written a book, Tower of Secrets.
