
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Joint Economic Committee (JEC) Chairman Jim Saxton (R-N.J.) announced today that Nicholas Eftimiades, author of the first ever scholarly analysis on communist Chinese intelligence, will testify at a hearing, "Terrorism and Intelligence Operations," on May 20, 1998. Eftimiades' book, Chinese Intelligence Operations, has been translated into four languages.
Eftimiades specializes in East Asia studies and worked in the U.S. intelligence community for 14 years. He will provide much needed insight into the workings of the Chinese intelligence community. Eftimiades provides much needed insight into the workings of Chinese intelligence as its operations continue to gain prominence in the mainstream media. He will be available for questions for reporters after his testimony. The JEC hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, 1998, in Room 106 Dirksen Senate Office Building.
Eftimiades currently works for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). He previously held several positions at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the counter-intelligence staff at the State Department, and was a naval officer. He was awarded the DIA's Director's Intelligence Medal and his monograph, China's Ministry of State Security: Coming of Age in the International Arena was named Scholarly Work of the Year by the National Intelligence Center.
