WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Joint Economic Committee will hold a hearing on the July employment situation on Friday, August 6, 1999, JEC Vice Chairman Jim Saxton (R-N.J.) announced today. Dr. Katharine G. Abraham, Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), will testify.
"These employment data will give us the most current official information about the performance of the economy," Saxton said. "The Federal Reserve will be scrutinizing various aspects of this BLS report as it prepares for its interest rate policy meeting later this month. This hearing offers the opportunity to closely examine the BLS employment data, and also to review the latest consumer and producer price indexes with respect to the inflation outlook."
