Clearfield County was created in 1804 from parts of Huntingdon and Lycoming Counties and named for Clearfield Creek. The name was derived from the vast fields once cleared of undergrowth by buffalo wallows. Clearfield, the county seat, originated as the Indian town "Chinklacamoose" and was incorporated as a borough in 1840.

Since 1790, the Moshannon Valley has played anintegral role in fueling the Industrial Revolution with extensive natural resources such as coal and timber. Manufacturers in Clearfield primarily produce pressed metal products, and other major employers include retail business, health care and the state government. In the DuBois region in western Clearfield County, glass manufacturing has been a major industry for many years. The DuBois area has also become a major center for the manufacturing of powder metal products and machinery.

Celebrated for its natural beauty and breathtaking scenery, Clearfield County is covered with forested rolling hills, lakes and clear mountain streams. The Moshannon State Forest and state game lands offer excellent hunting or observation of deer, bear, wild turkey, rabbit, squirrel and grouse. Local streams and lakes carry bass, trout, sunfish and perch. And recreational facilities such as Curwensville Lake Recreation Area, Parker Dam and S.B. Elliot State Park feature hiking, camping, fishing, boating, swimming and much more.
