Lycoming County
Lycoming
County lies
in the heart of north central Pennsylvania. The largest county by geographical
area in Pennsylvania, Lycoming County is made up of rugged hills, forests,
rivers and streams. Williamsport, the county
seat, was first settled in the late 1700's along the West Branch of the
Susquehanna River and became the main northern river port in the valleys
of the Susquehanna. The 5th Congressional district includes south Williamsport
and western Lycoming county.
Lycoming County
has played host to presidents, actors, writers and once to the King and Queen
of England. The
county is full of many wonderful surprises from the simple charm of general
stores and
covered bridges to the spectacular beauty of Victorian homes and Gothic towers
built during the lumber boom era. Major employers include health care, government,
education and manufacturing. Every summer, international attention turns
to Williamsport for the Little League
World Series.
The West Branch of the Susquehanna provides about 14 miles of navigable water
making it perfect for canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and every other water
sport imaginable. Three of the county's five major streams are stocked with trout
and bass, and Pine Creek is one of the best trout fishing streams in the United
States. For those who prefer dry land, Lycoming County is located almost completely
within the Tiadaghton
State Forest region, and Little
Pine State Park contains more than 2100 acres of hiking, horseback riding
and cross country skiing trails. With something for every member of the family,
Lycoming County will have you coming back again and again!
