Internships in Congressman LaHood's office

Congressman Ray LaHood’s internship program offers students of all ages the a unique opportunity to learn about the functions of the House of Representatives, as well as the Congressman's work representing the 18th Congressional District, in central and west central Illinois.

An internship with Congressman LaHood presents a variety of opportunities to participate in the daily operations of a congressional office.

Internships in Congressman LaHood’s district offices are open to students of all ages. Internships in the Congressman’s DC office are limited depending on the time of year. During the summer, only college students entering their junior or senior years or graduate school students will be accepted. For the rest of the year, only applicants participating in a collegiate sponsored program will be considered.   

Internships in Congressman LaHood’s office are unpaid.  Students must be part of a demonstrated educational program.  Congressman LaHood supports students requesting credit for their internship through their school or university.  There is no application deadline and interns are accepted throughout the year, generally semester to semester, or during the summer.  Please keep in mind that there is a limit to the number of interns that may work in the office at any given time.

General intern responsibilities include:

  • Answering telephones
  • Data entry
  • Responding to constituent requests
  • Attending meetings with congressional staff
  • Assisting with special projects, including research
  • Assisting with constituent casework (in the district offices)

In the busy atmosphere of a congressional office, it is important that interns conduct themselves in a mature, professional manner; have enthusiasm; are well-organized and able to take initiative, follow instructions, perform well under pressure; and work well as part of a team.

Skills required:

  • Effective and professional phone manner
  • Computer experience
  • Punctuality
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to complete tasks efficiently and thoroughly
