The purpose of the effort is to encourage citizens to write letters and e-mails of appreciation and support to members of the U.S. armed services serving both at home and overseas beginning on the first anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks through November 11 (Armistice Day). This is done in remembrance of those who died in the attacks and to thank the men and women currently serving in the military for their continued service and sacrifice to the nation. The effort can serve as an additional reminder of what took place that day and can also serve to impress upon students the tremendous duty that members of the armed services perform. The effort is based on the bipartisan H.Con.Res. 450 introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Bob Stump (AZ-03), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee; Rep. Ike Skelton (MO-04), the Ranking Member of the committee; Reps. John Larson (CT-01) and Duncan Hunter (CA-52), also members of the committee. The effort is called "Operation Enduring Gratitude" based on the name of the U.S. operation in Afghanistan, "Operation Enduring Freedom." Congressman Larson held a videoconference with a group of young members of the Lions Club at the Hartford Armory on September 11 to kick off Operation Enduring Gratitude. The students were the first in the nation to participate in the letter writing campaign to members of the military to thank them for their service. |
