Larson presents award

Congressman Larson presented Judith Melchreit of Wethersfield with the 2004 Nancy Pilver Breast Cancer Heroine Award.  The award, named after the late Nancy Pilver and the inaugural award recipient, is presented to a breast cancer survivor from the 1st Congressional District who is dedicated and determined to bringing the issue of breast cancer to the forefront.  Learn more about Congressman Larson's efforts on breast cancer.


Larson announces grant

On December 9, Congressman Larson was joined by Winsted Mayor Maryann Welcome and Fire Chief Joseph Beadle for the announcement of a $191,036 Fire Act Grant for the Winsted Fire Department.  The purpose of these grants is to assist State, regional, national or local organizations to address fire prevention and safety.

On October 28, Congressman Larson announced that the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum in Wethersfield was awarded $150,000 under the National Park Service’s “Save America's Treasures” grant program to conduct a major structural overhaul of the Joseph Webb House, built in 1752.  Larson was joined by Jennifer Eifrig, Executive Director of the Webb-Deane-Stevens museum, and James O’Connell of the National Park Services regional office in Boston. 


Larson in Manchester

Congressman Larson visited officials from the Lutz Children’s Museum, the town of Manchester, the Manchester’s Early Learning Opportunity (MELO) Project, and program participants on November 8.  Larson helped the town obtain a $601,200 federal Early Learning Opportunities Grant to fund the MELO Project, which is a collaborative effort to help young children in Manchester to prepare for school through care and services for children and family.  Read more

On October 27, Congressman Larson, Senator Dodd, and Senator Lieberman announced that the CT Center for Advanced Technology has been awarded $21 million in federal funding to create a National Center for Aerospace Leadership.  Read more

On October 19, Congressman Larson hosted a forum at UConn Law School in Hartford for members of the public, area first responders and local officials to discuss the 9/11 Commission's report, homeland security and first responder issues.  Larson was joined by 9/11 Commission member Tim Roemer, who took questions from the audience.


Larson announces grant

On September 27, Congressman Larson announced a $1.2 million economic development grant had been awarded to Bristol to help fund the Southeast Bristol Development Park.  Larson was joined by Bristol Councilman Craig Minor, Mayor Gerard Couture, City Grants Administrator Robyn Bugbee, and Councilwoman Ellen Zoppo.


Larson testifies at Ways & Means

Congressman Larson testified on September 23 before the House Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures in support of his legislation, H.R. 1859, to prevent the IRS from taxing the local tax incentives awarded to local volunteer firefighters and emergency medical responders for their service to their communities.  Read Larson's testimony.

Congressman Larson joined Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez for the first day of school at Clark Elementary School.  Mayor Perez led a tour of the Hartford schools on their first day of the new school year and Larson presented the school with an American flag.

On September 2, Congressman Larson met with citizens at Manchester Community College to discuss the war in Iraq and explain his proposal to withdraw all U.S. troops by December 2005.  Larson believes U.S. efforts should be focused on the war on terrorism and the capture of Osama bin Laden.

On August 19, Congressman Larson presented George Ruhe of Wethersfield with medals he earned for his service in World War II and an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor.

During the summer district work period, Congressman Larson visited senior centers in East Hartford, Rocky Hill, and Windsor Locks to discuss the Medicare prescription drug legislation enacted in 2003.  Larson also released a study showing that the prescription drug discount cards created by this legislation have failed to provide the deep discounts that they promised.  Read the study. Voting security forum

Congressman Larson held a forum on voting security issues at the University of Hartford on September 1.  Larson is Ranking Minority Member of the Committee on House Administration which has jurisdiction over federal election law.

On August 24, Congressman Larson announced the introduction of the Nursing Home Fire Safety Act, H.R. 4967, to ensure that all nursing homes have automatic fire sprinkler systems.  The legislation was created in response to fires in nursing homes without sprinkers in Hartford and Nashville that claimed the lives of 31 seniors in 2003.  Larson was joined by Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez, Hartford Fire Chief Charles Teale, Spectrum Healthcare owner Brian Dickstein, and Todd Smith of the American Healthcare Association.  Learn more

Congressman Larson recently held a press conference to call for the United States to set a timeline to withdraw troops from Iraq by December 2005.  “This is a reasonable time frame to provide intense training of Iraqi security forces, including police, army and civil defense, rotate our troops out and to allow for a broad coalition of international troops to take over,” Larson said.

Congressman Larson joined a Congressional delegation trip led by Speaker Hastert to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.  He is pictured with Bernard and June Rader at St. Mere Eglise in Normandy.  Mr. Rader was a part of the 94th Infantry Division 301 Regiment during World War II.

On May 17, Congressman Larson attended the dedication of the Barbara Bailey Kennelly Post Office in Hartford.  Mrs. Kennelly represented the First Congressional District from 1982 to 1998.  On hand at the event were Governor John Rowland, former Governor William O'Neill, Senators Chris Dodd and Joseph Lieberman, Representative Rosa DeLauro, and former Representative Geraldine Ferraro.  Congressman Larson introduced the legislation naming the building.

Congressman Larson recently introduced the American Workers and Manufacturers Support Act to create jobs and support the American manufacturing sector.  He was joined for the announcement of the bill by Frank Johnson of the Manufacturers Alliance of Connecticut (MAC), Fred Tedesco of MAD in the USA manufacturers coalition, John Olsen of the state AFL-CIO, John Bauman of The Organization for the Rights of American Workers (TORAW), and John Leone of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce.  Read a summary of the bill.

On April 13, Congressman Larson met with representatives from Connecticut's hospitals and clinical oncology centers to discuss the issues surrounding the new Medicare reimbursement schedule for oncology care.


Congressman Larson appeared at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the CTWorks One Stop Center in Manchester on April 16.  The CTWorks One Stop centers provide job seekers with access to information on job vacancies, career options, and other resources to help them find employment.

During the April District Work Period, Congressman Larson visited a number of senior centers in the First District to discuss the new Medicare law and answer questions seniors had about the laws impact on them.  Congressman Larson visited Bristol, Granby, and Wethersfield.

On April 6, Congressman Larson visited the veterans hospital in Newington to assess the hospital's needs and view the new addition that includes areas for enhanced primary care, triage, substance abuse and mental health treatment areas.  The hospital served 52,000 veterans in 2003.

On April 5, Congressman Larson met with over 40 school superintendents and Board of Education chairs from around the 1st District to discuss the No Child Left Behind education law.  Larson was joined by Dr. Betty Sternberg, CT Commissioner of Education, Gary Brochu of the CT Association of Boards of Education, Sharon Palmer of the American Federation of Teachers, Rosemary Coyle of the CT Education Association, and David Larson (no relation) of the CT Association of Public School Superintendents.

Congressman Larson met with the Seniors in Action group in East Hartford to discuss high prescription drug prices, inadequate health care, and shrinking income for seniors.

Congressman Larson reads to third graders at Anna E. Norris Elementary School in East Hartford on March 2 as part of Read Across America Day.  Read Across America is the nation's largest reading event and occurs annually on Dr. Seuss' birthday.  This year marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Congressman Larson testified before the Connecticut State Legislature's Education Committee on the “No Child Left Behind” education law on March 1, 2004.  Larson was invited to appear before the committee by the panel's co-chairs, State Senator Thomas Gaffey and State Representative Demetrios Giannaros.  Read his testimony.

Congressman Larson discussed his trip to Iraq, Kuwait, and Kyrgyzstan at a public forum held at West Hartford Town Hall on January 22.  Larson went to Iraq to assess the safety of the troops and the climate for transfer of power to the Iraqis.

On January 5, Congressman Larson met with seniors at the Bloomfield Senior Center to discuss the new Medicare reform law.  Larson talked about his concerns with many of its provisions and Judith Stein of the Center for Medicare Advocacy explained some of the practical aspects of the new law.
