Davis Applauds the Inclusion of Abortion Reduction in President's Faith Based ProgramFebruary 5, 2009

Today, President Barack Obama announced an Executive Order creating the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, an expansion of Former President Bush's Office of Faith Based Initiatives. Congressman Davis's office was notified by the White House today that abortion reduction will play a significant role in the program's expanded mission, a move that Congressman Lincoln Davis applauded today in a statement.

"For too long, the issue of abortion has been used as a wedge to divide our great country along partisan lines," said Congressman Davis. "As a pro-life Democrat and the author of the Pregnant Women Support Act, I am eager to seek out common ground by providing real solutions to reducing abortion."

The Pregnant Women Support Act provides a comprehensive solution to many of the challenges that may lead women to seek abortion services and aims to reduce the number of abortions in America by 95% over the next ten years. Of the 1.29 million abortions performed annually, 73% of women seeking abortions list economic factors as contributing to the decision to have an abortion. To counter this, the Pregnant Women Support Act includes language that lowers the cost of bringing a child to full term. The bill also seeks to support victims of domestic violence.

Congressman Davis re-introduced the Pregnant Women Support Act for the 111th Congress earlier this year. Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania introduced this legislation in the Senate as well.
