Fentress County

Created 1823 from Morgan, Overton and White counties; named in honor of James Fentress (1763-1843), speaker of the state house, chairman of Montgomery County Court, commissioner to select seats for Haywood, Carroll, Gibson and Weakley counties.

Did You Know?WWI hero and Congressional Medal of Honor recepient Sgt. Alvin C. York was born in Fentress County. Actor Gary Cooper won an oscar for his portrayal of York in 'Sergeant York', which was released in 1941. When York passed away in September 1964 President Johnson sent General Matthew Ridgeway as his representative. Ridgeway was the WWII commander of York's old division- the 82nd Airborne. Governor Frank Clement and former Governor Prentice Cooper were also in attendance at York's funeral.
